I am planning a trip to Paris to visit my niece who is studying there. She is staying near Parc Montsouris in the 14th. We thought we might stay somewhere near where she is. It will be me and her 14 year old sister. The trip will be at the end of November. I am one who is good with public transportation - so I don%26#39;t think getting around will be an issue, wherever we stay.
From what I have read, the 14th sounds like a nice area - not too touristy - though it is not that close to most of the major attractions.
Do you think it is an OK idea to stay in that area? Or are we best off staying elsewhere.
Can anyone recommend some good budget hotels or B %26amp; Bs - lets say under 75 euros a night for a room with twin beds.
Merci beaucoup

For what it%26#39;s worth, after visiting my sister last fall and having lunch at her host family%26#39;s house, I%26#39;ve decided to stay right in their neighborhood in the 16th when I travel to Paris this fall. You won%26#39;t be in the middle of all of the sites, but in a way, I find that a lot more interesting. Barring a strike (and we had one last time I was there), mass transit in Paris is a great way to get around, so you shouldn%26#39;t have any problems there.

I can recommend the area - but there aren%26#39;t too many hotels around the parc Montsouris. I suggest you look in the area around the rue Daguerre/avenue du Général Leclerc, also in the 14th. It%26#39;s a lively and pleasant area to stay, with more shops, cafés and restaurants.

Actually, there a few hotels around Parc Montsouris, mostly the two-star variety....
This B%26amp;B style in the 13th arr. gets a lot of praise:

- used to be Villa Royale Montsouris?

With a budget of 75 euros for a twin room, the choice is limited. The Villa Royale Montsouris is in the rue du Tombe Issoire - but the reviews are somewhat mixed, and it is not cheap... But the Hotel Parc Montsouris is also directly near the Parc - and more or less in your price range. The Hotel Beaunier, Hotel Virginia and Hotel Montsouris Orléans are all in the area I suggested, a bit west of the Parc.

Thanks very much travelnutty, Jan2 and msp.
I will check out the places you have mentioned. I have looked at some of the websites.
I am not completely tied to the 75 Euro limit - but I am hoping to keep costs down. Also it does not have to be right near Parc Montsouris - I sort of used that as a starting point because it is close to where my niece is.
merci beaucoup encore un fois

Your niece has her reasons for residing in this area---most probably budget and convenient proximity to the school she%26#39;s attending. These needn%26#39;t be your reasons for selecting a location. One assumes that you and her sister have come to Paris to visit and tour the city and its sights, as well as visit your niece. So why not discover which is the nearest and most convenient METRO station to her location in the 14eme ??...and then search for your own hotel accommodations, somewhere more central and convenient to %26#39;..the-rest-of-Paris..%26#39; you%26#39;ve also come to visit ?? with convenient direct Metro ligne access to your niece%26#39;s location in the 14eme ??...making it easy for your student niece to visit you, you to visit her and for you to be convenient to %26#39;the-rest-of-Paris%26#39; as well.

I support KDKSAIL suggestion: if I were you I would stay on a more central location, but not too far from your niece%26#39;s place (not in distance but in time needed with the metro). I suggest that you stay in the left bank somewhere around Montparnasse or Saint-Germain des Prés.
|||
To stay in a more central location, you should expect to nearly double your room budget.

Not necessarily. There is certainly a %26#39;premium%26#39; that%26#39;s paid for great LOCATION...but as example, if your hotel budget runs to 3-star properties, you can always make compromises and take a small step-down in hotel amenities and select a perfectly good, lower-priced 2-star hotel instead---effectively trading a hotel-star or a few amenities for a great LOCATION and the precious TIME that may be gained from better LOCATION.

Uh-huh. Montparnasse - maybe. Show me a twin room in Saint Germain for 75-110€. Hotel de Nesle, Hotel St Andre des Arts - OK....very few choices for sure. It does help that the trip occurs in late November.
