Nimes Airport to close completely?

Does anybody know if the rumours are true - that Ryan air are cancelling all flights from Liverpool to Nimes and Leeds Bradford to Nimes and that Garons airport will be closing? It is not possible to book any flight from the North of England to Nimes after mid October 2008. Any information gratefully received!(it is still possible at present to book flights from Luton and Charleroi in November)

This is my local airport.

Rumours of its closure have been pretty well continuous for the last 7 or 8 years.

It is a military airport with a civilian terminal. So, Air Traffic Control, safety, fire engines, etc are shared.

Until 2001, the airport had regular Air France services to Paris with Air Littoral competing on the same route. The Paris route vanished when the TGV reduced the Paris - Nimes time to under 3 hrs. Air Littoral was acquired by Swiss Air and finally ceased operations in 2003.

This left just one daily Ryanair flight, and a %26quot;save Nimes airport%26quot; campaign was launched. Funding was found from local government organisations despite the regional ambition to further develop Montpellier airport.

Nimes then acquired Ryanair flights to Stansted, Luton, East Midlands, Liverpool and Charleroi at various times. Winter flights to EMA %26amp; Liverpool have been reduced or suspended in the past.

An airline proposed basing aircraft at Nimes serving 12 destinations for 2008, but the plans were abandoned.

As part of military cuts, the military aircraft will no longer be based at Nimes, but Nimes-Garons will be kept open as a reserve airfield.

Nimes airport is at risk. It is under 1 hour from Montpellier, Avignon and Marseille airports. Perpignan, Carcassonne, Girona and Toulon airports are within easy reach. All offer low cost flights. Montpellier will run the service to Gatwick this winter (the first time for many years). Marseille has opened a dedicated low cost flight terminal which is expanding services rapidly. During 2008 Beziers airport has launched low cost flights to UK.

As far as I am aware, current rumours are just that.

You can also fly Beziers to Luton ( or LondonLuton as the bureaucrats call it ) Perhaps we could have a Ryanair flight from LondonLiverpool airport to Bez!

Is an?yone lobbying the powers that be to have a small station built by the rail line that runs directly in front of Bez airport since it is the main line between Montpellier and Bez and the TGV uses the line?

Hi,

The rumours are always there. On the difficulty booking a flight, I think there was an issue with Ryanair site. I travel regularly from Liverpool to Nimes and could not get a booking for next easter. I tried from Liverpool to Nimes and I tried from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Marseille without luck. Then just today, I tried again and could get flights from all 3 uk airports for next april.

Try again and you might be in luck, but you might find the cheap flight offers take up all the seats.

Cheers,

Jim
