Whilst in Nice, as we will be so close to the Italian border I am thinking of making a day trip to Italy. Is there any reliable bus service and is it possible to do it in a day?

Yes, its possible to make a day trip to Italy - I%26#39;d go by train personally as its more complicated and longer travel time to go by bus

Popular Italian towns that you can get to in a day by train are, from closest to furthest:
Ventimiglia - just over the border. Popular market on Friday mornings. You say in another post you go to Calais for shopping. Well, the people on the French Riviera go to Ventimiglia for the shopping.
Bordighera - a bit further along from Ventimiglia.
San Remo - popular Italian Riviera seaside town with an old town and market.
Genoa - where Christopher Columbus was born, big port. Can just about be done in a day if you set off early.
There are other towns, but the 4 above I%26#39;ve done as day trips from Nice.

A lot of Liguria is rather poor not especially attractive. Rather than going further, as you are from the %26quot;Garden of England%26quot; check out if a trip to the Hanbury Gardens just over the French/ Italian border might not fill the bill.

If you have any interest in beautiful settings you will not do much better than this on a day trip.

It is not possible to do a day trip from Nice to Italy by scheduled public bus.
It is possible to get the bus to the Hanbury Gardens (timetable link in NiceLife%26#39;s post above) by getting a local bus in Menton to Garavan and then walking a couple of hundred metres across the border to Ponte San Luigi (the upper frontier a little above the sea, not the one at sea level). But from Nice it would be much easier to get the train to Ventimiglia and then the bus. Buy your bus tickets at the cash desk in the Ventimiglia station bar, and the bus stop is near the station (down a very short hill to traffic lights, turn right and you%26#39;ll find the stop under a tree).
I agree with MonacoCabbie%26#39;s suggestions as to the best cities to go to on a day trip. Train times from Nice up to December 13 are available here reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en? or here www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html. The trenitalia site will also give you prices for journeys on the one convenient cross-border through train at 10.05, and for journeys onwards from Ventimiglia on the many other possibilities which require a change of train there. Times after December 13 will not change much, and should appear online soon.
Much of Liguria across the border from France is very beautiful indeed, particularly inland. But inland areas are accessed more easily by car than by train and the often infrequent local buses.

Correction to the above post: train times in Italy will not change much after December 13, but trains from France to Ventimiglia change considerably and become even more frequent.

NiceLife%26#39;s link is blocked by my computer and also Google as a malevolent site because it attempts to loads spyware on visiting computers .
Friends of nine visited Hanbury Gardens 2 weeks ago with visiting family and they were so disappointed with the place that they asked for and got their entrance fee refunded.
And the woman on the entrance apologised for the state of the place and blamed the current batch of students looking after the gardens.
My friends then went to see the Nobel Villa in San Remo which they highly recommend.

Google gives many false warnings: on Friday it warned about a site I run that had nothing malevolent on it.
Provided you have up-to-date anti-virus software and a good firewall, you can turn off Google%26#39;s warnings.
