how to dress in January

I have never been to Paris %26amp; I am going in January. I want to dress warm %26amp; comfortable, but nice also. What is appropriate (respectable) %26amp; needed for that time. I read somewhere that %26quot;tennis%26quot; shoes to eat in aren%26#39;t appropriate. How cold is the average temp there then. ( in degrees).

Thanks!

Have you ever been to Boston in January?

It%26#39;s reasonably similar. Temps in the upper 30s/low 40s, some biting winds and bone chilling cold at times. Not much if any snow, though it could happen.

Layers, scarfs, warm gloves, hat.

I wear running shoes to walk around. If we are walking to dinner, I have my other shoes in a bag with me and switch. I gave up on trying to find nice looking shoes that were truly 5-mile walkable. One bad blister can ruin a couple of dayys walking.

I%26#39;d get something warmer for your feet than tennis shoes. Your feet will freeze. It is darn cold in January, and the cold is a moist cold...so it goes right to the bones!

The matter is not that tennis shoes are not appropriate to Paris, they are not appropriate to winter! Take comfortable boots, it will be far better.

January is the coldest month in Paris. Average temperature is 3.4°C but can vary a lot; it can be freezing sometimes.

Agree that warm and comfortable boots (weatherproof) are a must in January/February/March period. You may not get much precipitation but you certainly will get some, and it will be pretty cold. As others have said, take layers and sweaters, and scarves and gloves, and you should be fine. A pair of %26quot;nice%26quot; boots will be perfectly appropriate for any restaurant and still will keep you from freezing (although it will take up more luggage space if you take both casual and nice ones - I would suggest wearing one pair on the plane to cut down the luggage weight/bulk).

I was thinking of buying all weather type walking shoes for my NYE trip. I haven%26#39;t gone shopping yet but if anyone has any good suggestions, I%26#39;m looking for some.

I was going to wear the down Old Navy jacket that they seem to sell every year. My other option is a long spring coat with a sweater underneath.

There is a chill in the air that makes its way into your bones which makes it feel about 10 degrees colder than the thermometer shows. I would strongly advise bringing some long underwear. I wear a brand called Cuddle Duds and they are thin enough to fit under your dress pants and wool turtlenecks. If these are not available in California try the JC Penneys website or a ski shop.

Lands%26#39;End also sells silk thermal undies -- thin as a whisper, weigh nothing in your luggage, and are guaranteed to keep you toasty.

I agree -- tennies just aren%26#39;t warm enough to keep you from having icy feet -- and once your feet are cold, the rest of you will follow!

it is really really cold in january, id advise taking a lot of sweaters and a thick coat if you are going to be walkin a lot, a pair of gloves is a must also, i forgot mine last time and had to buy some as my hands were near blue!

I love silk long underwear for travel in the winter as a previous poster suggested. They do great double-duty as pajamas in addition to taking up next to no room in your luggage. And they dry FAST after a hand-wash.
