We will be visiting Paris between Christmas and New Years, staying in the 6th near Luxembourg Gardens. We plan on hitting the usual first-time sites, as well as enjoying as many cafes as possible :) What is the best way to get around? Of course the metro would be efficient, but then you don%26#39;t see much of the city. Is there a %26quot;main%26quot; bus line to take? For example, in Rome, you take the #19 to most of the sites. Also, is there a transportation pass that would be useful (good on bus and metro), or would it be better to just pay as we go? We do love to walk, but from what I read here, it%26#39;s likely to be pretty cold and damp.

It%26#39;s true what you say about Rome but Paris is larger. However try

it may help you plan your trip better.

I am afraid the best way to discover Paris is walk walk walk...
Of course there are bus lines that you can take when you want to get to a distant site, but there is no bus line that allows you to see most of the sites, as yes Paris is larger than Rome. I think the metro will be the most convenient way in these cases.
What you could do is take the hop on hop off bus to get a general feeling of the different neighborhoods, but you will see only one Paris area as there are 4 different routes; have a look here:

Hi --
You really need a better guide book. These questions should be answered in the first couple of chapters in a good one. The problem with a guide that is so incomplete is that you have no idea what other information is also missing.

I was in Paris last year at the same time you%26#39;re going. Not only wasn%26#39;t it cold and damp, it was cool and delightful. Just prior to your trip, check a website such as weather.com to see the 10-day forecast so you%26#39;ll have a better idea of the temperatures you might expect. Don%26#39;t put too much stock in what the forecast is for precip tho. It generally isn%26#39;t accurate.

It is for today unfortunatly, cold wet and windy and it%26#39;s a bank holiday tomorrow!

As far as getting around Paris... all I%26#39;ll say is TAXI, TAXI, TAXI!
Seriously!
We went to Paris last July. We had no problems with pickpockets because we avoided traveling on the Paris Metro. If you go back far enough in the Paris forum archives, you will find articles on %26quot;scams%26quot;.
I%26#39;m so glad that we read the articles before making the trip. Some others were not so lucky.
Good luck!
