Feb. and what to do w/ 11 yr old

I will be attending a conference in the countryside in Nice in Feb and my husband and 11 yr old will be with me. Any suggestions on things for them to do for a couple of days? Should we rent a car?

What does your 11yr old like to do/see?

Any interest in art/history/animals/boats/castles/mountains /snow/ trains etc ?

he likes mountains, cars, boats, caves, castles...

A day in Monaco might be interesting for him.

Fantastic boats to look at in the harbour. There%26#39;s a cave in the Jardin Exotique http://www.jardin-exotique.mc/grotte_eng.htm (nothing that special but good if he%26#39;s not used to much more spectacular caves), there%26#39;s the prince of Monaco%26#39;s private collection of 100 classic cars www.visitmonaco.com/index.cfm… (excellent, but not if he%26#39;s only interested in modern cars as the newest is 1986) and the fish and shark tanks in the Oceanographic Museum are wonderful www.visitmonaco.com/index.cfm…

If the Ferrari tours are running in Monaco in February he might also enjoy being a passenger and going round the Grand Prix circuit.

For castles, it%26#39;s a long time since I went, but in Nice there%26#39;s the fort on Mont Alban, the ruins on Castle Hill, the ruins on Mont Boron. Also, the Isle des Lerins off Cannes, the Fort on the Ile Ste Honorat and the prison of the man in the iron mask on Ile Ste Marguerite. Also, the fort at Entrevaux which can be reached by the Chemin des Fer de Provence (train des pignes). The ruins of the fort on the Tete de Chien above Monaco. These last 2 require some effort to climb the hill, so could also be interesting as %26quot;mountains%26quot;.

when exactly will you be in Nice?

End of february is carnaval in Nice

and the fete du Citron in menton

I would definitely visit Entrevaux for the train ride , mountain scenery, mediaeval town etc and the Citadel [castle]

the 2 iles de Lerins are interesting -my son was really excited by the man in the iron mask connections

ferries from cannes here

Sainte-Marguerite

Also your son might like to go to parc Alpha to see the wolves at le Boreon /St Martin vesubie in the mountains by Mercantour national park - one euro for the bus ride

or on the train des neiges to Casterino [weekends only and needs to be booked in advance ] and do sledging , snowshoeing , x-country skiing or take a ride in a dog or horse sled
