Hello - I%26#39;ve been reading a lot of posts regarding transportation and have seen the Metro mentioned as well as the RER. What is the difference between these two? Is it just the routes?

The Métro is the urban transportation system for central Paris whereas the RER is a train system that links Paris to the suburbs (and the airports for example). RER means Réseau Rxpress Régional (Régional Express Network).

As far as most tourists are concerned, the RER and the Métro are the same. What matters most is that you travel (on either one) no farther than the ticket you purchase allows.

As long as you stay on the metro, you do NOT have to worry about going farther than the ticket allows - the cheapest tickets (zone 1-2) are good for the entire metro network.
Only when you get on a RER train, you will have to worry about which zone your destination is in. You can check this on a map, for example www.ratp.info/orienter/cv/carteparis.php
(As you can see, there are a few dozen metro stations that are technically in zone 3, for example Bérault; you do not need a zone 1-3 ticket to reach these by metro.)

The metro is an intra-city transportation system designed to carry people within the city of limits itself. The RER is mostly an intercity transportation system used to travel from outside of Paris into the city itself and vice versa.
If you are familiar with New York, the Paris metro is like the NYC subway system and the RER is like the Long Island Railroad or Metro North.

Within Paris, you can think of the RER as an %26quot;Express Train%26quot;. It can get you across town more quickly than taking the Metro. Generally speaking the Metro and RER trains use the same stations, but the trains use different platforms.
Provided you stay within Zones 1 %26amp; 2, the RER costs the same as using the Metro.
Here%26#39;s an example. Our hotel was near Charles de Gaulle - Étoile and we needed to get to Gare de Lyon. Taking metro line 1, the trip would be 11 stops. Taking RER line A, the trip was only 4 stops.
Hope this helps.
