Where is the City Centre

I am planning a Weekend trip for four couples to Lyon next March. We would like to stay in the city centre but I am not sure where the centre is. Any advice on locations, hotels, restaurants, prices etc. would be very helpful

Gosh, you start from the very beginning, don%26#39;t you?

You should first browse these 2 useful websites in order to check want you can do and see in Lyon and get general infos on the city, its different neighborhoods and main attractions :

http://www.lyon.fr/vdl/sections/en/tourisme

http://www.en.lyon-france.com/

The city centre is called the %26quot;presqu%26#39;île%26quot;, it is the area in-between the 2 rivers. Just use Google Maps to have a look (maps, satellite view, street views available) : http://maps.google.fr/

Regarding hotels and restaurants recommendations, you will find a lot of informations on this forum : just browse the last pages, ot use the search box. And come back with more precise questions, i will be happy to help you.

Thanks for your useful reply and the links. I dont want to waste too much time getting in and out of the centre from our hotel, so I want to be as close to all the action as possible. I will look in the area between rhe rivers for a hotel and that should leave us within walking distance of most of the attractions. Any good markets in Lyon at that time of year (March).

Staying in the Presqu%26#39;île you will be close to the best Sunday markets in town, that are located along the Saône banks:

- a beautiful food market left bank between Pont Bonaparte and Pont A. JUIN (from early morning till 1:30pm)

- a nice used books market all day long, on the same river bank, getting north

- an art market on the other bank : just cross the Saône on the pedestrian bridge in front of Palais de Justice, the market will be on your right.

Hi

We stayed at Grand Hotel Boscolo in Lyons and found this to be a good hotel, between the Rhone and Saone rivers, convenient to the main public buildings and restaurants. It is easily accessed by car from the Quai running beside the Rhone and has undercover parking if this is of interest.

We just returned from Lyon and am glad we took advice from Only-Lyon to stay in Lyon instead of at the airport. We stayed in the Presqu%26#39;ile at Hotel des Artistes.

We arrived there on a Sunday, left our luggage at the hotel and drove to Part Dieu (train station) and left our Avis rental car. As we were on the other side of the Rhone and walked back from there. About a half hour.

This hotel is on Place Celestins and in a very good location to visit everywhere on foot. There are several other hotels in the area, as well as many, many restaurants and lots of shopping. All the high end boutiques, Cartier, Escada, Rolex, Louis Voutton, etc. are within a couple of blocks from there.

You can find restaurants in all price ranges. For example, we had moule et frites with a salad for lunch at 10 euros, plus a pichet of wine for 8 euros.

Too bad we came in a little too late as there seemed to be a great market. Unfortunately they were just putting away their wares when we got back from the car rental.

Take a walk in the city at night and see everything lit up. Quite pretty. Too bad we did not have more time to spend there.

Thank you for your feedback Lizzie! Glad you liked the Célestins neighborhood...it is actually my neighborhood!
