I drove out to the Reims area on Saturday and visited Chateau Thierry. There is a lot of very good information and historic preservation and recognition of World War I sites and the American involvement in that area. Normandie understanably gets most of the %26quot;war buff%26quot; attention, however the WWI story is very rich and powerful in its own right. The town of Chateau Thierry itself isn%26#39;t much; the Office de Tourisme lady was extremely helpful.
Checked into a hotel/gite in a 12th century donjon in Droizy. Very cool and interesting place owned and remade by an architect.
On the owner%26#39;s recommendation we had dinner at Le Chalutier in Soissons 03 23 59 64 69. Excellent seafood and a full menu of meats and poultry also, but primarily a seafood resto; the place was full all night.
Sunday to Reims, The cathedral is really something to see and certainly rivals Notre Dame de Paris. Very interesting Roman ruins of what was the last stronghold of the Romans in northern Gaul, finaly eliminated by Clovis around 500 AD.
It is true that Reims is pretty dead on Sunday, but we had an excellent lunch at Edgar 03 26 09 70 70. They have a terrasse and ground floor, but it was windy and cold so we took a window place on the first floor and had a lovely view of the Place de Forum. The pasta and morielles and the salmon pave were both excellent. Very interesting menu and many champagnes to choose from.
Then a stop by caves Charles de Cazanove 03 26 88 53 86. Got a goood deal on their brut, a very nice promotion - 13 euro per bottle when purchased by the box of six. They did a quick tasting for us and we did not go om the tour.
The drive back to Paris was an easy hour or 90 minutes.
