Restaurant help

My wife and I will be visiting MSM and staying on the island at La Mere Poulard. We are looking for a nice place to eat dinner, and not a tourist trap. I realize that everyone has said that we%26#39;d be better off eating on the mainland, but I can%26#39;t seem to find any names of restaurants on the mainland. I%26#39;m looking for some suggestions on restaurants with a good view, good food, and not too expensive.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

We stayed at the St Pierre in 2002 in a room overlooking the street. This was a mistake. All the tourists go up and down the street till about 1am then all the rubbish is carted out and all the supplies carted in for the rest of the night. Try to get a room that does not overlook the main street.

La Mere Poulard is quite famous but is now very touristy and their food is regarded as a rip-off and from memory has no view. Further up the street on the right is the St Pierre which has a restaurant which was just OK and shortly after that is another place called from memory Hôtel Du Guesclin which has a restaurant that opens out onto the ramparts at the back with a view across the waters of the bay. It was full and we could not get in when we were there but the menu looked OK. You would need to book.

Of course this was six years ago and things can change. There are very poor reviews of all the restaurants on the island on TA though this one is not listed there.

Here is a site for restaurants with their websites

Maybe the thing to do is to pack a luxurious picnic, a bottle of wine and glasses, and eat it sitting on the ramparts somewhere or in your room. Do not attempt to buy this on the island, bring it with you.

However, be warned, I have never, ever, seen so many cars in a carpark nor seen such a human traffic jam as in the main (and only) street of MSM. It is swamped in tourists. Walking up above the town via the ramparts is usually easier.

By the way, if coming by car carry a printed copy of the confirmation that you are staying on the island. They let you park really close if you have that and in 2002, there was just a small, one off, fee. At least, thats how it worked then.
