I am going to rent an apartment for 6 weeks and would like to be able to call home each night (morning). What is the best way to do this? I have researched some apartments that offer free calling to the US, but I haven%26#39;t been successful at one being available for my dates. One landlord said that calling cards were fairly cheap??
Any advice?

When I was in Paris last April I bought a calling card for 20 euros or less (something like that - not very expensive). I was able to make several calls to the US using this card. I%26#39;m sure there are others who can give you more specific info about this that I can. You might want to do a search on phone cards in the France forum and see if any more helpful info comes up.

You got lots of good answers to this one last time you posted it. Why a second time?

If you look at the date of this posting, it was originally double posted (this for some reason happens a great deal). One of the original posts received many answers. This duplicate sat, unanswered until EminMaine saw it and responded.
I am sure Hylasgirl appreciates all answers but this question has already been answered.

Thanks for that good clarification. I am presuming that is why I sometimes see an entry with just bump written in, to bump it mack up the list?

Well, just in case someone is lurking and reading who is curious about the answer... in my opinion, skype is the best way! Of course this only works if you are traveling with your laptop, but I think a fair amount of people do that these days. Skype is a free download and you just configure in the numbers you want to call -- there is a very small charge for dialing direct telephone numbers and it%26#39;s free to skype anyone with a computer who is also using the service. Sounds techy I know but it%26#39;s really super easy to use.

We are big SKYPE fans. We use the free service (computer to computer) daily and we also registered a local phone number in the city where our adult children live (so they have no excuses calling their mom and dad every once and awhile). SKYPE is almost too good to be true so take advantage of it before they figure out how to ruin it.
SKYPE would be my recommendation.

While I do agree with those who use and recommend VoIP, I do not agree with your choice of software.
Consider:
1. Skype is proprietary software, owned by Google and not supported or developed on various independent platforms.
2. Using Skype, one is locked into this service, you will always be depending upon Skype software for VoIP communication (unless you change identities or SIP)
3. You are tied into the Skype fee structure. OK if you never call a telephone or cell phone.
As an alternative, I personally use open source software. Open source software allows you the options of:
1. Totally avoiding commercial or for profit businesses.
2. The flexibility to use your SIP through any software.
3. You will be able to shop the least expensive VoIP to land line services.
I recommend you consider replacing Skype with Ekiga:

Correction: Skype is owned by eBay.
