Beaune a good day trip from Paris

My husband and I are traveling to Paris Nov. 20-26, 2008. A friend who lives there offered to take us on a trip outside of the city. We thought Reims would be good and doable in a day--she thinks it might be boring and suggested Tours, Strasbourg or Beaune instead. Beaune looks lovely but I%26#39;m wondering if we could make this a long day trip rather than an overnight? We also thought about going to Lyon but are hoping for a smaller town feel outside of the city--despite all of the wonderful offerings of Lyon! Any thoughts/suggestions? Thank you!

Beaune is a good idea but since you%26#39;re going to change trains in Dijon (1h40 from Paris gare de Lyon), I suggest you visit it as well.

Dijon was the capital of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy, is still the capital of Burgundy and is really worth a walk in the historic center. It is a nice alternative to Lyon which is much bigger.

Go to the nearest tourist office not far from the train station and ask for the %26quot;Owl%26#39;s trail%26quot;, a brochure that leads you to all the main sites in Dijon.

You actually follow the brass steps on the pavement and stop when you find a big square with an owl and a number (see my pictures)then read the description of what you are seeing right in front of you.

If you go on a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday, don%26#39;t miss the covered food market in %26quot;les Halles%26quot;. Have a look at my videos to get an idea.

If you like museums, do not mis the Fine Arts museum, one of the oldest and biggest museums of France (right after the Louvres) or the small Magnin museum, with its beautiful 17th century architecture and its large collection of paintings accumulated by the Magnin family over the years, and the rooms dedicated to the ancient furniture are lovely.

Don%26#39;t forget to rub the owl(on the side of Notre Dame church) to bring luck to you and your loved ones. With the left hand!:-)

All this will take you a couple of hours (since you%26#39;ll be just scratching the surface...), you can then head to Beaune (20 min by train) and spend the rest of the day if you wish. Do not miss the Hospices near the tourist office.

Enjoy! :-)

Beautiful photographs, Thanks for sending us there !!

Been to both and loved them both---the essence of Burgundy.

However, for such a short visit, I would opt for Beaune--smaller town, more compact, easily traversed, nice shops and restaurants, etc.

Again, both charming spots, but given time constraints....Beaune.
