I%26#39;m trying to get from Cologne, Germany to Meribel in France for a skiing trip in January and am thinking about splitting the journey by taking the train/hiring a car.
From my searches so far I think my best bet would be to get the train to Basel (4hrs) and hire a car from there.
Alternatively I could get the train to Geneva and hire a car/get the bus from there.
Any tips on the best way to make the journey and what the roads are like for driving from Switzerland gratefully received! Or how to get cheap car hire etc....
p.s. i have looked into flying and I don%26#39;t think it would make the journey much shorter as the best going is Frankfurt to Lyon, neither of which are my start/end point and would have to pay more to take equipment!

Hi,
A friend of mine lives in Zurich and his preferred method to come visit me in the Tarentaise is to train to Geneva and then hire a car. This is because driving all the way from Zurich is a hassle on the winding dual carriageways, and train from Geneva to Bourg St Maurice usually involves 2 or 3 changes (and then you still have to drive to resort).
Slightly shorter journey for you, but I%26#39;d still suggest train to Geneva, then hire car to Annecy - Albertville - Moutiers and then follow the signs for the last 30 mins or whatever it is.
I%26#39;ve read that hiring a car on the %26#39;french side%26#39; of the airport terminal in Geneva can be significantly cheaper than hiring on the Swiss side, but I%26#39;m not sure if that would work if you%26#39;re coming to Geneva from Switzerland. I don%26#39;t know enough about it I%26#39;m afraid.
There%26#39;s always a bus from Geneva Airport to Meribel if you can make the connections. Check out altibus.com (which I think will redirect you to alpskibus for this journey)
Cheers,
Matt

Hey,
I%26#39;ll be travelling from Mannheim to Meribel in January as well and will be taking train from Mannheim to Moutiers (aprox 8 hours) and then take a transfer minibus or coach (approx 1 hour) to get to Meribel.
Train should be around £100 (one way) and transfer depends on whether you take private transfer or coach.
I am sussing it all out at the moment and am a little bit confused as there are lots of transfer services, but this certainly seems to be a way of doing it!
