I%26#39;m hoping someone can please advise me. I%26#39;m thinking of booking a surprise day trip on EuroStar to Paris next year as a birthday present for my husband. As he%26#39;s facinated by the Albert Kahn photographs I was wondering if it would be possible to visit the museum and gardens and still have time left over for just a taster of Paris. If so, some suggestions would be greatly appreciated, from where best to soak up some street atmosphere, to a good place for a late lunch/ early dinner etc would be great. We don%26#39;t want a sight seeing filled day, more in the nature of a romantic day out! As time would be precious, would it be better to use taxi%26#39;s to get around or would the Metro be best? And if so would the taxi fares be very costly?

I suppose it%26#39;s possible to go out and visit the Musée Albert Kahn in Boulogne-Billancourt...but I%26#39;m not sure how much of your available time in Paris during your day-trip you%26#39;d want to spend on this side-trip. Given the opening/closing hours of the museum, it isn%26#39;t as if you could conveniently make a bee-line directly there from Gare du Nord after an early AM Eurostar arrival...and then return to Paris for the rest of the day.
For the rest of the day you seem to have vaguely in mind (%26#39;..romance..%26#39; is a commodity that you either pack and bring with you...or not) you probably couldn%26#39;t go far wrong by taking the time to go down to your local mega-bookstore (Border%26#39;s, Barnes %26amp; Noble%26#39;) and pre-purchasing a STREEWISE PARIS compact, accordion-fold map and acquainting/orienting yourselves with the city..it%26#39;s lay-out...the relative locations of the places and things about Paris that interest you...likely routes for getting about, etc.
One-calandar-day MOBILIS Zone 1-2 transportation passes (5,80€) would provide you with %26#39;hop-on/hop-off%26#39; access to all punblis transportation (RER, Metro, Bus, Tram, Funicular) in Paris. You could begin your day by taking the #42--GARE du NORD/HÔPITAL EUROPÉEN-GEORGES POMPIDOU public bus route-- www.ratp.info/orienter/f_plan.php… --from it%26#39;s starting point right at GARE du NORD and cuts diagonally across the city. You could hop-on the #42 (heading in the direction of Hôpital Européen-Georges Pompidou) take it to Eiffel Tower and then spend the rest of your day meandering your way back across the city to your Eurostar Gare du Nord departure point.
You%26#39;ll find that central Paris is fairly %26#39;..compact..%26#39; and that while the Metro is certainly efficient and convenient, walking will be the best way to see, enjoy and experience Paris. For those times when you want to cover more distance, more quickly, than having a MOBILIS pass will allow you to hop-on %26amp; hop-off buses and Metro conveniently as mood or moment strike.

I do not remember the museum exhibit containing an extremely large number of photographs, or perhaps it was that my interests were oriented more towards the gardens. The Albert Kahn Museum is located in a part of Paris somewhat more residentially oriented. There are few restaurants nearby and any %26quot;street atmosphere%26quot; will be very tame at best. Still, it is easy to reach by Métro from central Paris so a trip there takes little time.
Perhaps you already know about the excellent book of Kahn%26#39;s photographs available from the BBC books:

Thank you both for your replies. I%26#39;m think i%26#39;m going to book a hotel for the night, its a better option then attempting to cram too much into just 1 day! Sarastro, yes, i had seen the book on the BBc site, it looked an ideal present, i ordered it and its been dispatched to me today!

Double check that the ewhibit will still be on, as when they finish an exhibit , the museum closes, they only work with temporary exhibitions. This one about India is great, very beautiful. A lot of pictures but the place is not very large so it depends if you look at every picture in detail or not. The gardens are beautiful but not too large either.
