camping in bordeaux

Thinking of taking the trailer tent and 3 kids to Bordeaux in the summer hols 2009. Not really sure where to start!! Can anyone please recommend a nice, %26#39;clean%26#39; campsite in that area, (never go to anything other than a 5* in this country), as i%26#39;m a tad fussy!!. Would really appreaciate any tips/stop off points etc. Thanks.

There are a number of campsites in the Bordeaux area, mostly situated along the Atlantic Coast (naturally). Others may be found inland, such as in the Entre-deux-Mers which is a particularly picturesque part of the region. (There are even plans to create a campsite in the city itself, but this won%26#39;t be happening in time for your vacation.)

However, to the best of my knowledge there%26#39;s nothing quite at the five-star level around here. There are a number of very good sites with swimming pools, children%26#39;s play areas, restaurants, etc., but although the facilities are there, they%26#39;re not necessarily the finest, most elaborate of their kind.

As you probably know, camping is *extremely* popular with the French--I am personally familiar with this as it is my wife%26#39;s preferred manner of vacationing. In my experiences looking for a place to put down the tent stakes throughout France I%26#39;ve noticed that although rare, five-star campsites tend to be found around the more luxurious destinations, such as Biarritz, for example. The location in the Bordeaux area that comes closest to this would be Archachon, so I%26#39;d suggest you start looking at the campsites around there.

What you would certainly want to get is a copy of the Michelin guide to campsites in France (the French equivalent of the AA guide for Britain). If there is five-star camping to be had in the area, they would certainly be able to tell you where.

Thanks, that%26#39;s really helpful advice. I%26#39;ll hunt down a copy of the guide you%26#39;ve suggested.

An alternative to the 5* camp site could be the %26quot;gite rural%26quot;.

Have a look there : www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites

May be you can select one for about one week to visit Bordeaux, Bassin d%26#39;Arcachon, Medoc and around Libourne/St Emilion for the vines and then move to the see-side for your remaining hollydays?

You could do worse than try Le Tedey at Lacanau which is camping amongst the pines at the edge of the lake. Close to the sea too for good measure and alternative swimming arrangements.
