Depending upon what your travel objectives are, any of the three cities which you name could be used as a base. Each has frequent train/bus connections with the other two. Avignon might be more centrally located for exploring Provence and it has bus service to most smaller communities but frequency is very limited.

If you are interested in exploring Provence in general I recommend you either rent a car or hire a touring company.

We have stayed in Arles, Nimes and Aix en Provence in our travels, always with a car. As the prior poster said, it might be best to have a car available and I agree. I personally prefer Nimes, I just like the look, the parks and boulevards there.

Wherever you decide to stay, I am certain you will enjoy.

I%26#39;m guessing this is a quick post-Christmas weekend away, hoping for sunshine :-)

If that%26#39;s the case, then there is a lot of merit in heading for Avignon, which is big enough to find restaurants and cafes for relaxing and watching the world go by, and also has good rail links to other towns. You could have day trips to Arles and Nimes as well as Orange if you%26#39;d like to see the Roman theatre, l%26#39;Isle-sur-la-Sorgue which is different again, and even Aix (possibly easiest by TGV, although there are also bus services).

Do you know about the Mistral? If it%26#39;s blowing while you%26#39;re there, you%26#39;ll need thermals and fleeces ... or just retreat to a sheltered spot with a nice hot drink!
