Need to buy TGV tickets ahead of time?

We get into Charles De Gualles airport mid January 2009 and we are wanting to go from the airport to Chambery on the TGV train.

What is the most direct train to take?

Do we need to buy TGV tickets in advance or can we buy them at Charles De Gualles airport?

You can buy TGV tickets at the airport, but you may not get to travel at your desired time, class, or day. I would advise you to purchase them on http://www.voyages-sncf.com .

The direct trains leave Gare de Lyon in Paris, not CDG.

Direct Paris-Chambery trains are selling from 22E to 60E. Why the large gap? The 22E tickets are nonrefundable early bird specials called PREMs. The 60E are fully refundable. The tickets in between (55E) are refundable for a small 10E fee.

Trains leaving the airport have one connection, usually in Lyon. Tickets for mid-January are 40-60E per person.

How to decide:

Are you comfortable with public transportation? If so, venture into the city via the RER B (only 8.40E) and save some money.

Don%26#39;t feel like mastering Paris mass transit on your way to Chambery? Depart from the airport and change in Lyon.

Website instructions:

1. Go to Voyages-SNCF.com

2. Click the TRAIN tab.

3. In your browser%26#39;s address bar, find LANG=FR. Change it to LANG=UK. Hit Enter.

4. The page will change into English.

5. For the airport, enter ROISSY as your departure point.

6. For direct trains from Paris, enter PARIS as your departure point and click the radio button next to %26quot;Direct trains.%26quot;

7. Leave the country of collection at FRANCE. Click SEARCH.

8. Choose your preferred journeys.

9. If you purchase PREMs tickets, reject the insurance by unchecking the box on the order summary page.

10. If given the option, opt to print your tickets. 11. If you do not see this option, select %26quot;Collect your ticket from an automated ticket machine.%26quot; If you purchase the tickets with a %26quot;black stripe%26quot; American-style credit card, you will end up retrieving tickets at the counter instead. When you in France, bring a printout of your confirmation e-mail and the credit card used for the purchase to the nearest SNCF counter (there is one at CDG).
